New Year Resolutions - Do They Work?

The new year is a time of excitement! You go into the new year with friends and family and you have all these goals in your mind that you want to achieve. Get healthy! Go to the gym EVERYDAY! Don’t drink! Just to name a few.

But let's be honest, most of these new year's resolutions fail within the first two weeks. You get tired of eating salad and vegetables and you just want to eat a big bowl of chips. You realize your life is way too busy to be going to the gym every single day. And sometimes you just need a glass of wine at the end of the day! So when people ask me if I believe in new year's resolutions, my answer is… HELL NO!

We beat ourselves up trying to achieve new years goals and we put all of these plans together and say that this is going to be the year, January 1st is when it is all going to change! But why wait till January 1st? Why not start today? Why not start december 27th? When you wait to start January 1st and then ultimately fail, it makes you feel bad about yourself. You may have taken 3 steps forward but now you're 5 steps behind where you were when you started. So how do you make changes that last? You start when you're ready. You do not wait for a specific day to start because then you are going to start saying things like, “well it's my last week so let me eat all the pizza, all the pasta and all the cheese.” You go into the new year already having adopted those healthy habits so that once the clock hits 12:00 and its January first you are confident that you are going to be able to keep up the good habits and really take on the year as you had imagined. So no, I don't do new years resolutions.

I am a firm believer of when you are ready you are ready that is not tied to a specific date. That day could be december 31st or august 4th, it doesn't matter! The second you think “I’m ready” you START.
